COMMITTEES
Please look at committees you might join or jobs you might volunteer for
if you join our League.
You may call the League office — (415) 507-0824 — for more information.
ACTION
Our Action Meetings on the first Monday of every month are our best attended. Members with issue portfolios in housing, healthcare, transportation, natural resources, and education, give reports and may request a recommendation for action to the LWVMC Board, which meets the next week. Call to have your name added to the Action agenda mail or email list.
VOTER SERVICE & PROS AND CONS
Voter Service activities, for which the LWV is best known in the community, include voter registration, candidate and issues debates, and impartial analyses of ballot measures. Jobs include moderating and time-keeping public forums; studying and explaining ballot measures with the Pros and Cons team; working on or off camera on our taped debates; youth and new voter outreach projects; and helping community groups with their elections.
TRANSPORTATION, LAND USE, AND HOUSING
We closely monitor the issues of transportation, land use, and housing, attending meetings of boards, councils, and commissions where the issues are discussed and decided. We take many kinds of action - letters, testimony, committee membership, ballot measure endorsements, etc. - based on the positions of Leagues at all levels, federal, state, regional, and local.
EDUCATION AND LIBRARIES
The Education Committee follows education issues and may take action based on national, state, and local League positions. Following state and local studies of community colleges, the Marin League is participating in the state study of the K-12 public school system. We continue to monitor the meetings of the College of Marin Board of Trustees.
HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES
The Health and Social Services Committee meets about every 60 days to
discuss issues on health, mental health, and welfare. We report to and
may advise the Action Committee on local issues. We are following major
changes and election at Marin Healthcare District. Janice Wright is our
chair and deeply knowledgeable about many healthcare issues. Dan Beittel
has resigned as co-chair, but continues to follow developments at Marin General Hospital as health permits. We urge you to attend LWVMC Health Committee
meetings (see Calendar).
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The International Relations group meets the last Monday of the month to discuss subjects selected from the Great Decisions series, published by the Foreign Policy Association.
NATURAL RESOURCES
The Natural Resources Committee studies environmental issues in Marin. Its current focus is on water and energy including the relationship between water and energy.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
We are working to improve our use of technology with our local LWV website, our SmartVoter website; our records, and the basic communication among members. We monitor the county's process in negotiating our new telecommunications contract with Comcast.
ISSUES AT THE TAMALPAIS
The League provides programs on issues of common interest at the Tamalpais retirement community in Greenbrae on the third Thursday of each month. Meetings are not restricted to residents of the Tamalpais.
MONITORS AND OBSERVERS
League members attend meetings of boards, councils, and commissions, some attend as disinterested observes, some as advocates for League positions. Monitors and observers tend to select those issues on which they have special interest and expertise. They report to the monthly Action Meeting.
THE VOTER (NEWSLETTER)
THE VOTER'S new editor is Ann Batman. This informative newsletter is published monthly. NEWSHOUND REQUEST: Noteworthy events and issues are needed to create a dynamic and interesting newsletter. Please submit COMMITTE REPORTS and newsworthy information by the 15th OF EACH MONTH. VOLUNTEERS prepare The Voter for mailing once a month. Please join this happy crew for approximately two hours.
MEMBERSHIP
This group works to assure that membership maintenance and growth are
part of all League activities. This committee also helps keep are
membership data base current, sends out notices on annual dues and
arranges for printing and mailing current membership information.
